Brought to you by the Eastvalley PTA
What is EVRC?
Eastvalley Reading Club (EVRC) is a PTA sponsored program designed to motivate and improve reading level and comprehension. The club is available to all students at Eastvalley. The only requirements are that the student be able to read and take a computer test independently.
EVRC uses the Accelerated Reader software program by Advantage Learning Systems. Accelerated Reader (AR) has been rated the nation’s best selling reading motivation program. The program is used in many of the Cobb County Elementary schools.
AR test Books are available in each classroom, the Media Center, the East Marietta and Merchant Walk branches of the Cobb County Public Library System. By using the Cobb Virtual Library, CVL.cobbk12.org and Eastvalley’s Destiny Program, you may determine if your student’s book has an AR test. You will need a username and password to enter the site. These can both be obtained either in your child's agenda or by asking their teacher. Once you are at the Cobb Virtual Library, follow these steps to find the reading list:
1. Click Elementary and enter username and password
2. Click on the Destiny icon
3. Choose Eastvalley from the drop down menu
4. You will now be in Destiny Quest. You may search here for any book in the Media Center.
All eligible books in the Eastvalley Media Center are flagged with color coded stickers on their spines. These books also have a sticker on the inside cover that shows the reading level, point value and the Accelerated Reader quiz number. Your teacher can give you guidance regarding your student’s reading level.
Attention Kindergarten parents: Kindergarten students will begin EVRC at the discretion of their classroom teacher.
After thoroughly reading the book, the student may take a test on the computer in the classroom or the Media Center. The student must be able to take the test on the computer independently and be able to understand the quiz questions. A score of 80% or above is required to pass a test. Students earn points based on the length and difficulty of the book and the number of correct answers. The program provides valuable information on the student’s reading comprehension and reading level.
As students test throughout the year, they reach various point levels and receive awards and recognition according to their grade level. Please see the attached sheet showing the various incentives and point levels needed for each goal. There is also information regarding the dates of each Books for Breakfast event. A few days prior to the event, teachers will distribute invitations to students who qualify for Books for Breakfast. As always, parents are welcome and encouraged to attend Books for Breakfast.
