Donors Choose - FYI - I have a project posted on Donors Choose for a small group table.  It started at around $460 and Lakeshore Learning will fund half if I get my other donations in quick enough.  I have already received donations and the balance left to fund is only around $194!  Special thanks go to those that have already supported this project.

Spelling - Students were given their Spelling words for this week on Friday.  I will be going over homework expectations on Monday.  Download Spelling Words for Sort 2 - both listsThe rotation for Spelling/Grammar homework will be as follows: 

Monday - Words Their Way activity (due Tuesday morning)

Tuesday - Word Shapes (due Wednesday morning)

Wednesday - Study words for test (online preferred ... spellingcity.com)

Thursday - Dictionary work - Students are to look up the words they are not familiar with in a dictionary.  If students say they know all of the words - they need to look up at least the content words (the last 4 - 5 words on the list).  For each word they look up, they should write down that word and the two guide words that were on the dictionary page where they found the word. (Due on Friday morning)

Spelling City - Several students have mentioned that they could not access the free games on www.spellingcity.com.  They are still available.  DO NOT PAY for the premium membership!  Log onto the website and click on "Find a List".  Then search using my last name.  When you see my name appear - click on it.  That will take you to the Spelling list page.  Under each list you can then choose to either do the "Teach Me" activities or the "Play a Game" activities.  The "free" activities are in the left column.  There are many free activities for your child to use to practice their Spelling words.  This website could be used daily - or at least on Wednesday and Thursday night as they are preparing for the test.  Put the name of the game your child played in their agenda. 

Donors Choose Project - I have a new project on  www.donorschoose.com.  It is for a small group table that will be used during guided reading and math learning blocks.  The great news is that Lakeshore Learning will pay for half of the table!  We only need to raise $230.  So.... spread the word to relatives, grandparents, friends... who want to help support your child's education.  I would appreciate any help you could give to support this project. 

Boosterthon Fun Run - THIS THURSDAY!!!  Our Fun Run will take place between 9:30 and 10:45 a.m.  Please make sure your child has another shirt and a change of shoes and socks for after the Fun Run.  Our field has become a dust bowl this summer, so your child will definitely appreciate being able to change into a fresh shirt and clean shoes after the race. 

BLOG Update Notification - If you would like to receive an email notification every time I update my blog,  just enter your email address in the area just underneath the list of Archived postings.  You will be subscribed through a service call Feederburner and will be notified when updates have been posted. 

Absence Notification - Parents do not need to call when a child is absent.  Just send a  note that includes the date, the child's name, the date(s) your child was absent, and the reason why the child was out on the day that the student returns to school.  If your child went to the doctor - most pediatrician's offices have a form that they can give you.

Transportation Changes - Remember, all transportation changes must be sent in writing.  If your child needs a bus pass because he/she is riding on a different bus or is getting off his/her regular bus at a different stop, please go to our website (www.eastvalleyelementary.com) and look down the left column under RESOURCES.  Click on Bus Pass.  Please fill out the bus pass completely and send it to school with your child to get Ms. Wacker's signature.  If you forget to send it, you may email it to Mrs. Beth in the office (elizabeth.lauria@cobbk12.org) or fax it to 770-578-7216 by 10:00 a.m.  Thanks for your help in getting your child to the right place in the afternoon.

Boosterthon Fun Run - It's that time of year again.  Our most successful fundraiser for our school is back!  Your child probably came home today talking about the pep rally that they attended this afternoon.  If you thought the prizes were nice last year.... oh my.... they are even better this year!  Your child brought home their pledge card today in his/her green folder.  Remember.... they must bring it back every day to get their prizes daily as they collect their pledges.  Our first goal is to have every student in my class log on to www.funrun.com  tonight.  The class with the most students to log in tonight will be able to have lunch with the Booster Boys!  We are really excited about that. 

     The actual Fun Run will be held on September 1st at 9:30 A.M.  (More details to come)

Homework & Agenda - Remember, it is your child's responsibility to do their homework every night.  All students should be reading 25 minutes each night.  They should also being doing Math homework along with Spelling/Grammar homework if it has been assigned.  A parent should initial the agenda and the reading log every night.  Students should be reviewing their Spelling words.  A fun way to study for the Spelling test would be to have your child go on www.spellingcity.com.  Pull up my class lists and your child should pull up either Sort 1 - List A or B.  The specific list they are responsible for is taped inside their agenda.  Students that do not complete their homework will complete it during recess. 

Chorus Tryouts - Check out Mr. Bernard's blog about the date and times for chorus tryouts.  Third grade students are allowed to tryout.  I am one of the assistant directors and would love to have some of my students in the Eastvalley chorus!

 

 

Week of August 15, 2011

WELCOME BACK!!!  We are off to a great start in third grade.  I must give my class a big compliment!  They are very good listeners and have definitely returned to school eager to learn. 

Parent Orientation Tonight - I hope that all parents have the opportunity to come to the PTA Parent Orientation tonight.  There will be two sessions to choose from to visit me tonight for a 30 minute orientation session.  Many things are different in third grade, so I encourage you to come visit with me tonight. 

Come at 5:00 p.m. to sign up for  ASP, get your carpool number, and purchase this year's Eastvalley spiritwear.  The PTA meeting will start around 6:15 with a quick business meeting and introduction of the teachers.  Parents will be able to attend one of the two sessions becoming familiar with the procedures in my room and the expectations in third grade.  I hope everyone can come tonight!
