Week of Sept. 26, 2011

Spelling - We are moving on with our spelling patterns and will be learning how to spell words with r-influenced vowel patterns - ar, ir, or, and ur. Download Sept. 26 - Spelling list A Spelling list is in your child's agenda to let you know what list your child should be studying.  Remember to encourage your child to go on Spelling City - www.spellingcity.com.

Musical Event This Friday! - Bring the entire family back to Eastvalley this Friday at 6:30 P.M.  Join the Dancing Drum group for a special event in the gym. 

Math Fact Practice - Remember, your child must bring in the fact cards that they are going to be using at home to study their multiplication facts.  I've already checked off a few students.  Feel free to let your child bring them in early to let me know they have the necessary materials at home to learn their multiplication facts.

 

 

 

Multiplication News

Multiplication Fact Practice - It's that time!  Time to help your child learn his/her multiplication facts.  I am adding a link to a great resource for you to use to make triangle fact review cards.  Download Fact Triangles  This style review is so beneficial since it reinforces the fact family concept.  Please print these out on cardstock or have them copied on card stock.  Your child will be responsible for their 0's, 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's by the end of this grading period. 

Now... here's another fun thing to do...  Help your child skip count by learning songs!  Sing the following tunes using the fact's products to help your child learn how to skip count.  This skill will really help in your child mastering their multiplication facts.

Week of Sept 20, 2011

Spelling - We will continue studying homophones again this week.  Once again there are only two lists.  List A includes our homophone pairs as well as eight content words.  List B only includes homophone pairs.  Check your child's agenda for the list that they are responsible for learning.  Download Sept 20 Spelling List Vers. Rocks! Rocks! Rocks! - Get ready for your child to show interest in digging in the dirt.  We are continuing to study about rocks and minerals in Science.  We will then start investigating Ancient Greece and how that civilization influenced our country's architecture and form of democray.  We will also being understanding how that civilization influenced our modern day Olympic Games.

Multiplication Here We Come - It's time to bring out every trick you know to help your child learn their multiplication facts.  They will be responsible for knowing their 0's, 1's, 2's, 4's, 5's and 10's facts by the end of this grading period.  They will be responsible for their facts 0's through 10's by the end of the 2nd nine weeks.  Our 100's Club goal will be 0's through 5's - 100 facts in 10 minutes.  I will be posting some fun links, songs, and fact card ideas over the next few weeks.  Go to multiplication games for some fun learning the facts!

Week of Sept. 12, 2011

Spelling - Please remember that students are also responsible for learning the content and high priority word list along with their main list.  Due to homophones being the concept for our Spelling sort this week, there will not be a List B.  Only two lists - Lists A and C will be posted on spellingcity.com.  Download Spelling List for Sort 8 - one list.  Remember, if your child did not bring their Word Shapes homework paper home, you can download it from my post on August 30th.

Handwriting Practice - Many students can use some extra practice with their handwriting.  Feel free to access the Zaner-Bloser website where you can create manuscript (printing) practice worksheets.  I would suggest creating a few worksheets to let your child practice writing their first and last name.  Students should be able to write to scale using wide rule notebook paper in third grade.  Allow your child time to practice at home if you are seeing scores of 1's or 2's on their spelling dictation assessments.  Zaner-Bloser Fonts Online  When you click on the link - then click on the toggle button marked "FREE".  Once again, there is no need to pay to use this sight.  Printing worksheets is available for free without a membership.

Please note that sloppy handwriting on homework will cause your child to redo their homework assignment.  Acceptable handwriting is required on all classwork and homework. 

Rounding Practice - Most students are understanding the overall concept of rounding when they are rounding to the highest place value in the digit.  The following website links will provide your child the opportunity to round to a lower place value within a multi-digit number, i.g. 1,248 rounded to the nearest 10's would be 1,250.  I encourage you to allow your child the opportunity to use these interactive websites for Math practice.

NEWS FLASH!

Boosterthon Donations - Please remember - only those donations sent in by 9/08/11 will go toward the classroom 10% contribution to your child's classroom.

Google Voice Account - My Google voicemail account is now activated.  I know that you might think of a question that you might want to ask me about your child late at night... or early in the morning before you leave for work.  That's why I have now set up a Google voicemail account that you can call 24/7.  Your message will be automatically transcribed and sent to my home email account.  I will check this voicemail account after school hours and will respond to your questions either via email or a personal phone call the next business day.  My voicemail number is 770-609-5388.

URGENT!!!

BOOSTERTHON DONATIONS - Boosterthon money is due Thursday morning!  10% of what our classroom collects by Friday morning goes directly back to our classroom.  Help us by having all those that sponsored your child in the Fun Run pay what they owe by Friday morning.  Our class would like to buy a digital microscope with the money we raised.  Thanks to all of you who participated and to those that came out to the fun run!  It was a great time!  Living EPIC (Encourage, Play, Invite, Celebrate) in our classroom! 

Bus Safety Poster -  The deadline is fast approaching.  All entries must be submitted by Sept. 15.  The requirements for the poster are below -

1.Include this slogan in freehand drawn letters: I See the Driver--The Driver Sees Me

2.Drawing must be original, exclusive work of student.

3.At least a part of a yellow school bus must be present in poster.

4.Accepted media for design includes: markers, color pencils, paint, crayon or oil pastel. No collage!

5.11"x17" or 12"x18" poster board (keep flat, do not roll!!)

6.No lamination of poster allowed.
