Winter Adventures

   
Brrrrr.  More snow this weekend, we hope!   Our story this week was "The Snow Storm" by Heather Amery and Stephen Cartwright.  This is a story in the series of Usborne Farmyard Tales that we will be visiting again.  Poppy,Sam, Ted and the dog, Rusty hunt for the lost sheep, Wooley, in the snow storm only to find her and a new baby lamb.  After listening to the story, the children were introduced again to Braidy, our puppet friend who helps us to learn about story elements.  We used Braidy to talk about the characters, the setting and the main idea or plot of the story.  We sang a song to help us remember what a character is.  What would our lesson be without something good to eat? So, we made a cute snowman face using a rice cake covered with yummy cream cheese  and raisins for the eyes and mouth and a baby carrot for a nose - a great activity for following directions.

 

 

Let It Snow!

Today we read the story "Snowballs" by Lois Ehlert.  She writes of one of the special things you can do with snowballs - make snow creatures!  The illustrations show a wonderful variety ofmaterials one can use to decorate them.  The book also tells what snow is and what makes it occur.  After reading, we went online to www.starfall.com and clicked on the snowman. The children had a great time dressing the snowman by clicking and dragging items to place on him. We finished with two fun games of "Find the Snowball" and shooting the snowballs into a basket.  Yes, eventhough we have no real snow here in Georgia, we can be inventive and have fun anyway!!!  Have a wonderful weekend.

Winter at Eastvalley

   
Brrrrrrrrr     Winter has finally come to Eastvalley.  We are all wrapped warmly in our cuddly cloths and anxiously await the SNOW!  To add to the anxious expectation, we are reading a "Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats hoping that we can lie in the snow and make snow angels too. This is the story of a little boy's adventures during a snowy day and his attempt to save a snowball in his pocket.  It gives us an opportunity to list story details and put events in order as first, next and last.  Before our holiday break, we read "Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer." We talked about story character, setting and kickoff, and beginning, middle and end of the story.  To top off our series of lessons, we made reindeer cookies for a yummy treat!
