Week of August 29-September 2

Third Grade Students,

We had a fantastic day sharing what we KNOW about bats and what we WANT to learn about bats. You did a good job with your pre-test, and I know you enjoyed completing your "Bat-O-Meter." Are you excited about Silverwing? I know you can't wait to find out what happens to Shadow, the bat.

HOMEWORK: After reading, Bats on the Beach, it is now your turn to create your own bat setting. Draw (with pencil) and then color your picture called, "Bats on the ...." On the back (or another sheet of paper), write a descriptive paragraph about your picture and describe what your bats are doing. Be creative and have fun! Do your best work. You have 2 weeks to work on it!!!

*** Start thinking about your GBR project! They are due October 10th!!!

WEEKLY QUESTION: We've all heard of the phrase, "You are driving me batty!" Write about what drives you batty!

Enjoy your holiday weekend! I will miss you Monday, but will see you the following week.

Target Parents,

We're off to a fantastic start in Target! The students have enjoyed being in class for two weeks, and the students are starting to get into their new units. The students have shared their goals for the 2011-2012 school year, and I know they will reach them with persistance and determination!

Please remember to have your child check the Target blog on Thursdays and Fridays for the updated information. Students are expected to answer the weekly question in their journals, get their Performance Sheets signed, and complete any homework assigned in class.

Overview of Target Open House

Thank you to everyone who attended our Target Open House this morning! I know everyone has a busy schedule, so thank you for making an effort to attend. If you were unable to come, please take a minute to read the information below.

Please remember to complete the online Parent/Student form. This will help us contact you if needed and we'll be able to keep you up-to-date with field trips, Target projects, etc. You can find the link listed in the previous post below.

Week of August 22-26

Dear 2nd and 3rd Grade Target Students,

Did you have a great first day in Target? I know you are going to love our new unit about Bats. Have you solved any more of your Spelling Sudoku puzzle? Next week, we will begin to learn more about bats and how we classify bats in the classification system of living things.

I enjoyed seeing many of your parents at our Open House Friday morning. Please be sure to tell you parents to complete the online Parent/Student information form. This will help me contact your parents when I need to. The link for the form is on the Welcome page of the Target blog.

Homework: FLYING CLIPS! Make a flying creature using your clip. What can you add to it? Follow the directions on your homework sheet. Be sure to make a knowlege card using an index card.

WEEKLY QUESTION: (Answer your weekly question in your spiral notebook or composition notebook. Please write in complete sentences!) This week in class we talked a about our goals for the school year. Write about your goal for this year in Target class. What steps do you need to take to achieve your goal? How will you know when you've made your goal? Remember, it should be something that is realistic and you are able to reach for!

Dear 4th and 5th Grade Target Students,

ARE YOU READY to return to the days when knights were bold? You are hereby invited to take a journey through the Medieval Times. What was it like then? Who had the power? Why was salt so important during the Middle Ages? You will be learning about medieval armor, the influences of the church, and so many other facinating facts!! So, here you go...

Homework: Write a persuasive letter to Mrs. Covington/Mrs. Clatterbaugh and tell her what class "Buddy" job you would be the best at doing for our Target community. Be sure to write neatly, in complete sentences, and give at 3 reasons why you feel that this would be a good job for you! You may type your letter or write neatly on a sheet of notebook paper.

REMINDER!!!!! Target Open House is this Friday, August 26, at 7:20 a.m. in the Media Center. All Target parents are invited. Delicious breakfast snacks and coffee will be served! See you there!

In order to save paper and extra time, we are asking parents to fill out our contact information online. All information shared is strictly confidential and only available  to the Target teachers. Target Update: Classes start soon!

Target Students,

Welcome back! I hope you've had a great first week of school. Target classes will begin NEXT week, the week of August 22. Please read over the schedule linked below, and be prepared for class with all of your supplies. I have also attached the "Welcome Back" letter that you should have received last week.

We have a late lunch time again this school year. We eat from 12:35-1:05 P.M. Please eat a good breakfast and bring a snack! You are welcome to bring a water bottle as well.

Please invite your parents to attend the Target Open House/Curriculum Meeting next Friday MORNING, at 7:20 A.M. in the media center. I will be going over our curriculum and gifted standards as well as Target procedures for the year.

The second and third graders will study a unit called, "Bats, Shadows of the Night". It is an interdisciplinary unit on bats, designed to give students an understanding of this unique mammal. Check out the following link to read more:

The fourth and fifth graders will begin a unit called "Middle Ages- Putting the Pieces Together." This unit is a language arts and social studies based unit on the life in medieval times. While students learn about the history and cultures of this period, they can recognize sources of language, technology, literature, and traditions in our lives today that originated in the Middle Ages. The students will evaluate the feudal system and compare it to government today. The unit gives students the opportunity to explore a topic in depth and use critical reading and research skills as they conduct independent and group research. Pack up your curiosity, and get ready for an adventure back in time- back to the days of knights and castles!

Hello, Eastvalley Target Students!

I hope you are enjoying the last bit of summer vacation. I will be returning next week to set up our room and plan for our year together. I can't wait to see you and hear about your summer adventures.

I am attaching our 2011-2012 Supply List. You should have received a copy in the mail with your report card this summer. However, I am attaching it just in case. Please do not go out and spend a lot of money on new materials. You should be able to use the same binder you had last year. Make sure it is in good condition and you have dividers and the other supplies needed on the list to stay organized. You may need to replace some of the items like a checking pen, index cards, etc.

I have included some items on my "Wish List." Thank you for donating any items on this list for our Target classroom. I appreciate anything you may have that you'd like to share!
