Week of October 24-28

Second Grade Target,

Since it was conference week, we did not have a full day together. However, we did get a lot accomplished! Did you enjoy your math graph art? We will practice some more convergent thinking with a new Hidato puzzle in class next week.

Next week, we will work on finishing up some of our foldables and begin our bat research in the media center. I know you will enjoy your first day of bat research. Be thinking of a micro bat and mega bat that you'd like to investigate and learn more about.

Parents, field trip information and permission forms went home this week in Target class. We will be going to Racoon Caverns and the Discovery museum in Chattanooga on Thursday, December 1. Please send in your field trip payment and permission as soon as possible (no later than November 4).

Also, I appreciate everyone who showed interest in chaperoning our field trip. Due to our limited number of space, I am unable to bring all the parents with us. I have contacted all of our chaperones. If you are not attending this trip, we'd love to have you help out with our next field trip in the spring. Again, thank you for volunteering.

To all the monks and nuns of Eastvalley abby,

Mrs. Clatterbaugh and I were very impressed with your vow of silence and how you remained loyal to your promise all morning. Our day together focused on the history of the middle ages and how the church influenced society. After reading and researching about the powers of the church and life in a monestary, you now understand more about what life was like for a monk/nun. I can't wait to see how your illuminated letters turn out. We will work as scribes again next week to finish them up.

Parents, letters about our field trip to Medieval Times and Theater went home this week. Please take a moment to read over the information, sign the permission form, and return the payment. Please return field trip paperwork no later than Friday, Nov. 4.

Thank you to all the parents who showed interest in going with us to help chaperone the trip. Due to our limited number of space, we are unable to bring all parents with us. Thank you for volunteering, and I know we will have future opportunities for chaperoning.

A special "shout out" to Mrs. Alanne Orjoux. She has worked hard to help coordinate a special group rate for our Eastvalley Target students. Thank you, Mrs. Orjoux!!

Third Grade Target,

Fifth Grade,

Please dress as a monk or nun for our Medieval Church simulation on Wednesday. You may want to bring a robe, sweatshirt or sweater with a hood, graduation gown, etc. We will learn more about the influence of the church during the middle ages.

Second and Third Grade,

Bats, bats, and more bats!!! Did you enjoy Mr. Burnette's presentation today about bats? He is a professor at Clayton State University, and he came to talk to us in more depth about bats. Here are a few cool things that he taught us today:

* Bats can fly up to 65 mph!

* The smallest mammal in the world is the Bumble Bee Bat.

* Some farmers us garlic to put around a cow's neck to protect it from being bitten by a vampire bat.

* The oldest known bat is 42 years old.

* The White Nose Syndrome fungus was first discovered in 2006 in NY.

* 20 million bats live in Bracken Cave in Texas!

* Bats can produce up to 200 sounds (echolocation) in one second.

Fourth grade, I'm sorry I missed our day together this week. My daughter was very sick, and I had to stay with her. She is doing better now. I can't wait to see your GBR presentations next week!

Second and Third Grade Bat Experts,

WOW! Your GBR projects were creative and informative. We all enjoyed learning from your presentations. Some of your GBR projects included 3-D models, puppet shows, songs, bat houses, Power Point research shows, bat caves, and inteviews. Mrs. Clatterbaugh and I were impressed with the time you put into preparing your projects. Way to go!!!

Thank you for your patience this week. We started Target a little bit late because I was assisting the third grade teachers with the ITBS system-wide testing this week. Second Grade parents, we did not collect the Performance Sheets this week, so you do not need to sign them.

 CHANGE FOR NEXT WEEK ONLY! Third grade Target will meet on Friday, October 21, instead of Monday, October 17. I have a special guest speaker coming to teach us about bats on Friday.

Second grade students, you will join us from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 21, to hear our special guest speaker. You will still have your normal Target day on Thursday.
