Week of September 26th

Hi Eastvalley Family,

Tonight is Reading night at Zaxby's on Lower Roswell Rd. beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Kristen at Zaxby's will be reading a story and then the children will be completing a craft.  Zaxby's kids meals are only 99 cents during this time!! 

Tomorrow is PICTURE DAY!!!  Please dress your children in a nice shirt/dress and remind them to SMILE for their picture.  All students will have their picture made for the yearbook!  Thanks to our PTA volunteers who will be up here to help students through the line. 

CogAT and ITBS testing will begin soon for 1st, 3rd and 5th graders.  Letters are being sent home Tuesday to explain the process to those parents.  Remember to have your child rested, fed a good breakfast (no sugar cereals) and on time for school on testing days.  Encourage them to do their best without stressing them too much about testing.  Results will probably be back in late November/early December.

I hope all of you will join us for 2 special events this week at Eastvalley:

1)  Dancing Drums will be performing Friday night in the gym beginning at 6:30.  We look forward to a great rhythmic performance for our families. 

2) PTA Fall Fair is Saturday from 2-6 p.m.  All families are invited for this day of fun!

Week of September 19

Hi Eastvalley Family,

Progress reports are being sent home today with all students.  This gives you an indication of where your child is at this point of the 9 weeks.  There are still concepts/standards to cover and your child will have opportunities to change the grade.  Please talk to your child about participation in class, completing assignments in class and at home and behavior in the classroom. All of these affect how children learn during the day (positively or negatively). 

Tonight is the Eastvalley Foundation's Spirit Night at Saporito's!  Please join us from 5-7 as we enjoy some family time and some good food.  Several staff members will be there to say hi!  A percentage of the proceeds goes to the Eastvalley Foundation, so be sure to tell them you are from Eastvalley when you check out!

Picture Day is one week from today (Tuesday, September 27).  All students will have their picture taken as these are used for the yearbook.  Please remind your child to SMILE and dress how you want them for this picture.  They make great holiday gifts for family and friends.  

A hero in the classroom???  Yes, we have several, but one was recognized by Symetra Financial and The Atlanta Falcons!!  Mrs. Stephanie Hestad was nominated by a former parent and was surprised at an assembly 2 weeks ago.  She was presented with gift certificates and Falcons goodies.  She was honored at the Falcons-Eagles game this past Sunday night!  Congratulations to Stephanie Hestad, a hero in the classroom.

Week of September 12

Hi Eastvalley family,

The first 9 weeks is almost half over!  Are you helping your child by checking his/her book bag every night.  We try to send most important informational fliers home on Tuesdays, but homework may be in the book bag every night.  Agendas should be checked and signed by a parent each night after a child has shown you that they have finished all their homework.  Please ask open ended questions such as, "What are you learning in math?" or "What did you read about today in Social Studies?"  Progress reports will be sent home next Tuesday (September 20)to let you know what has been assessed up to this week and how your child is progressing towards meeting the standards of the first 9 weeks.  There will still be time to learn and improve before the final report card grades are determined.  If you need more information, please contact your child's teacher.

Please go ahead and put the week of October 24-28 on your calendar as Conference Week. We hope to see each parent in the building that week to meet with your child's teacher and get the report card.  This will be a great time to talk about how your child has adjusted to the new grade level, their strengths and weaknesses and to answer any questions.  It is important so please make sure you find the time to meet with the teacher that week.

Remember that anytime you need to change your child's dismissal, it should be discussed at home before your child leaves and you should write a note to your child's teacher.  The only time you should call in with a change is if you have an emergency (flat tire, unexpected trip to the doctor, etc.).  We should not be getting dismissal changes from you more than once or twice a year by phone call.  We want to make sure your child is safe and goes to the designated place at dismissal time.  Thank you!!

Bus passes are online now for you to fill out and send with your child in the morning.  The bus pass should be filled out with all the information at the top and then your child brings it to the office for an administrator to sign at the bottom (sorry, parents, your signature doesn't work with the bus drivers).  Please go to www.eastvalleyelementary.com, look on the left column under "Resources" and you will see the link for bus pass. 

Thanks to all of you that came out to the East Cobber parade Saturday.  We had a great time seeing you amongst the crowd. Here's a picture of Mrs. Rosa (Classified Employee of the Year) and Mrs. Morgan (Teacher of the Year) in the parade with Ella, Eastvalley's mascot!!  Thanks to Mrs. Alanne Orjoux for providing the car and driving us in the parade (on her birthday, no less!)!!

Week of September 6

Hi Eastvalley Family,

I hope all of you enjoyed your 3 day weekend and celebrated Labor Day with family and friends.  It was nice to have an extra day to relax and enjoy a good book while listening to the rain outside.  Growing up on the Gulf Coast, hurricanes and tropical storms were part of my life.  I've learned to be informed, be prepared, but not to get overly anxious when one is in the area. 

Thursday night from 5:30-6:45, the Boy Scout leaders will be here to sign up your sons in grades 1st-5th for this year's scout programs.  They will be located in the cafeteria and invite you to join them for an information session and sign up. 

Boosterthon was a great success here at Eastvalley.  Thanks to all of you that came out to watch your children participate in the fun run last Thursday.  We had over 400 parents, grandparents and friends sign in for the event!!  Now it's time to turn your attention to helping your child collect the pledges they received from family and friends. Eastvalley students received pledges from 45 states and 26 countries!!!  Wow!!   Remember, a pledge is a promise and we want to teach our students to keep their promises.  All money is due Thursday, September 8.  If someone pledged online and submitted their email address, they can submit their payment online as well.  Checks need to be made payable to Eastvalley PTA.  Let's finish this fundraiser in EPIC style...let's collect 100% of pledges!!!  Thanks for your support.

Saturday is the East Cobber parade on Johnson Ferry Road.  The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and run between Mt. Bethel School and Olde Towne Athletic Club.  Come out and support our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Virginia Morgan and our Classified Employee of the Year, Mrs. Rosa Martinez.  We'll be Unit #52 in the parade in a car driven by Mrs. Alanne Orjoux (thanks for helping us out!!).  Come out and enjoy this wonderful family event.

It's hard to believe that the 10th anniversary of 9-11 is coming up this weekend.  It's also hard to believe that the children of Eastvalley (most of them) were not even born on this day. It is definitely one of those moments in history where you remember where you were and what you were doing.  I hope that you will take a moment to reflect on this day in our history and to remember all that were lost.
